MedTech College Indiana Borrower Defense: Federal Findings, Nursing Problems and School Closure

Did you attend MedTech College in Indianapolis, Greenwood, or Fort Wayne believing your training would lead to a healthcare career, nursing license, reliable job opportunities, or better earnings—and take out federal student loans to pay for it?

There is a substantial public record former MedTech students should know about.

The U.S. Department of Education made formal findings that MedTech substantially misrepresented job placement information, Indiana nursing regulators documented serious concerns involving MedTech programs, and the Indiana campuses ultimately closed. MedTech College also appears in Exhibit C of the Sweet v. Cardona settlement.

If MedTech made similar representations to you and you relied on them when enrolling or borrowing, these records could be important evidence for a Borrower Defense to Repayment application.

The Department of Education Found MedTech Overstated Job Placement Rates

This is the strongest public evidence.

In a July 26, 2016 recertification denial, the U.S. Department of Education said its investigation found that MedTech:

  • significantly overstated job placement rates reported to its accreditor;
  • significantly overstated placement rates disclosed to the Department and the public through Gainful Employment disclosures;
  • made numerous misrepresentations about whether individual students had actually been placed; and
  • used a third-party placement-rate verifier without properly reporting the arrangement to the Department.

The Department concluded that MedTech had failed its fiduciary responsibilities and made substantial misrepresentations regarding graduates' career outcomes.

Even more striking, MedTech reported placement rates of 70 percent to 73 percent for the four programs examined. The Department's contractor recalculated them at approximately 35 percent to 56 percent. Investigators also found instances where short-term unpaid externships were improperly treated as job placements.

Important distinction: the Department's detailed placement-rate sample involved MedTech programs in Falls Church, Silver Spring, and Washington, D.C., rather than the Indiana campuses. Former Indiana students should therefore use these findings as evidence of MedTech's documented institutional practices only where they connect to what the borrower was personally told, shown, or promised.

Indiana Nursing Regulators Had Their Own Concerns

The Indiana record is especially important for former MedTech nursing students.

Indiana State Board of Nursing records reported troubling 2014 NCLEX results across MedTech's Indiana campuses. The unofficial RN pass rates reported to the Board were approximately 54.7 percent at Fort Wayne, 34.5 percent at Greenwood, and 51.3 percent at Indianapolis.

In February 2015, the Indiana State Board of Nursing formally considered a proposed settlement agreement covering MedTech programs and voted to accept it.

By January 2016, Board records stated that its Indianapolis follow-up visit had been prompted by low NCLEX scores, that admissions to MedTech's Associate of Science in Nursing program remained suspended under the 2015 settlement agreement, and that MedTech was teaching out the remaining ASN students.

For a borrower who says MedTech represented that its nursing education would adequately prepare students for RN licensure, these contemporaneous state records could be highly relevant.

MedTech's Indiana Campuses Shut Down

Federal Student Aid records confirm that MedTech notified the Department that it would cease instruction on September 16, 2016 at Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, and Greenwood.

The Department's own MedTech closure fact sheet specifically directed former students to information about Borrower Defense to Repayment if they believed MedTech committed fraud, misrepresented its services, or otherwise violated applicable law relating to their loans or educational services. It separately explained possible Closed School Discharge rights for qualifying students whose education was interrupted by the closure.

Indiana's Archives and Records Administration now lists all three Indiana MedTech locations as defunct and maintains records for former students.

MedTech College Is Listed in Sweet v. Cardona Exhibit C

There is another major federal marker.

MedTech College appears in Exhibit C of the Sweet v. Cardona settlement under JTC Education, Inc., alongside Gwinnett College and Radians College.

The Sweet settlement concerned Borrower Defense applications alleging institutional misconduct. Exhibit C was used to identify schools for settlement relief for qualifying class members.

That does not mean that every MedTech borrower automatically qualifies for relief today, nor does MedTech's inclusion alone prove an individual borrower's allegations. But it is meaningful corroborative context when combined with the Department's actual MedTech findings and evidence of what happened to a particular borrower.

Could This Evidence Support Your MedTech Borrower Defense Claim?

Potentially—especially if MedTech told you things such as:

You would quickly obtain employment. Your program had a high job-placement rate. Career Services would place you in a healthcare job. Your nursing education would adequately prepare you to pass the NCLEX. The program would lead to licensure or specific career opportunities. Or you were shown employment statistics that influenced your decision to enroll and borrow.

A strong Borrower Defense application should connect the public evidence to your own experience: what MedTech told you, who said it, approximately when it happened, why you relied on it, how it affected your decision to enroll or take loans, and what financial or career harm followed.

Your MedTech student loans do not tell the whole story. The Department of Education's own findings, Indiana nursing records, the 2016 closure, and the Sweet v. Cardona record may provide important pieces of the evidence.
